Canceling Shopify means deactivating your store from the Plan settings - and only the store owner can do it. Two things trip people up: paid third-party apps keep charging after you cancel your plan, and Shopify doesn't refund partial periods, so timing matters. Export your data first. Shopify updates its admin layout periodically, so confirm the current steps on the official help page linked below.

How to cancel, step by step

1Export your data first

Before canceling, export orders, products, and your customer list as CSV. You'll lose easy access to them after deactivation.

2Cancel third-party apps

In Settings > Apps and sales channels, remove paid apps. Deactivating your store does not automatically cancel separate app subscriptions.

3Sign in as the store owner

Only the Store Owner account can close a store - staff accounts cannot. Log in to the Shopify admin.

4Open Settings > Plan

Click Settings (bottom-left), then the Plan tab. Scroll to the bottom to find Deactivate store.

5Deactivate and skip the pause offer

Shopify may offer a 'Pause and Build' plan - click Deactivate store again to decline, then enter your password and pick a reason.

6Confirm deactivation

Confirm to finish. Your store goes offline and billing stops going forward.

Frequently asked questions

Can a staff member close the store?

No. Only the Store Owner account can deactivate a Shopify store. Transfer ownership or have the owner do it.

Will I get a refund for the rest of my month?

No. Shopify does not refund partial billing periods, so cancel just before the next charge date.

Is my data deleted right away?

Shopify typically retains store data for a period after deactivation, so you can reactivate later - but export your data first to be safe.
